(b. 1981)
Graduated from the University of Art and Design Cluj-Napoca in 2004, and in 2008 he obtained a Master’s degree in Physical Theatre and Performance from the University of Huddersfield. In recent years, silence and empty space have served him almost exclusively as raw material, functioning as essential elements of language in the conceptual and practical configuration of the subject–object and transparency–opacity relationships, not only within the visual field but also in literature and dance.
The series Survival Unit shows how environments, although inert and inanimate, can become agents of a form of self-induced surveillance—a performance triggered by the spectator’s gaze, reflected in the rear-view mirrors mounted by the artist on inanimate objects and trees. The simple act of observing changes the reality of the surrounding environment, allowing Alex Mirutziu to play with the capricious definitions of artistic media: photography, performance, installation, and objects.
