Florin Mitroi

(1938-2002)

Was best known for his teaching work at the Nicolae Grigorescu Institute and later at the Academy of Art in Bucharest, from 1961 to 2002. His artistic activity was shrouded in deliberate discretion (during his lifetime, he had only one solo exhibition), distancing himself both from the artists of his generation and from propaganda art. Thus, the expressiveness of his drawings and paintings became known only posthumously.
The artist gave these bald heads with dark circles under their eyes the expression of the most afflicted souls, like icons of sadness and despair. Their graphic style, associated with the tempera painting technique, is reminiscent of ancient Byzantium.
