Ileana Pașcalău

(b. 1985, Caransebeș, Romania)

Ileana Pașcalău is a visual artist and art historian who is currently based in Berlin. She studied art history and visual arts at the National University of Arts in Bucharest. Between 2010 and 2012, she worked as a teaching assistant at the Faculty of Fine Arts there. In 2015, she earned a Master of Fine Arts from the Universität der Künste Berlin. Pașcalău’s work lies at the intersection of studio-based artistic practice and art historical research. She has taught visual culture at Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design in Kiel, Germany and worked as a research associate at the Academy of Arts Berlin from 2021 to 2024. Since 2025, she works as a research associate at the Humboldt Forum in Berlin. Her artistic practice and theoretical research focus on the history of the body, women’s history, gender politics in visual culture, and the relationship between art and medicine.

Recent exhibition participations include: Unleashing the Sins of Sculpture (Scânteia+, Bucharest, 2025); Tabachera cu scorpion: A Visual Journey into a Queer Novel (Bastion 3, Timișoara, 2023); the solo exhibition Shaving the Caterpillar (Mobius Gallery, Bucharest, 2022); You Feel — And Drift — And Sing (Combinatul Fondului Plastic, Bucharest, 2021); and Verschmutzung. Körperzustände. Faschismus” (Theater Oberhausen, 2020); “BURLUNGIS” (Galerie im Turm, Berlin, 2020); and “Lay Me Down Across the Lines” (Kunsthalle Bega, Timișoara, 2019).
