Was an important Romanian visual artist known for his contributions to experimental and conceptual art in postwar Romania. His artistic practice included painting, collage, drawing, objects, and installation.
Beginning in the 1960s, Bitzan developed a distinctive artistic language close to conceptual and experimental practices, exploring the relationship between sign, text, image, and object. His works reflect an interest in symbolic structures, visual systems, and the idea of the archive or document.
Bitzan studied at the University of Fine Arts Bucharest, where he later taught, influencing several generations of artists. He exhibited widely in Romania and internationally and is regarded as one of the key figures of Romanian contemporary art in the second half of the 20th century.
