Mihai Olos

(1940-2015)

Left a vast body of work that spans many genres (drawing, painting, sculpture, objects, digital art, performance), the artist also being one of the first in Romania to organize happenings during the 1970s. Inspired by the folk arts of Maramureș, as well as by objects from traditional peasant craftsmanship like spindles and spinning wheels, and even architectural techniques such as the interlocking of stacked beams, the artist developed unique spatial constructions. This approach also fostered a personal expression evident in his paintings, where optical effects arise from the analysis and repetition of patterns spread across the entire canvas.

The knot – a structure based on the intertwining of six elements that Mihai Olos borrowed from folk art – is essential for this artist who draws inspiration in particular from the traditions and nature of his native region of Maramureș. The knot allows thousands of combinations generating an infinite, even cosmic network of forms that Mihai Olos has developed into a coherent conceptual system throughout his career.
