Paul Neagu

(1938-2004)

Was an important Romanian artist. In his sculptures, inspired by various geometric forms, he explored the philosophical dimension. What distinguished Neagu from other artists of his time who practiced socialist realism – a practice imposed by the Bucharest School of Art – is the consistency of his works. Neagu always tried to find a common language between art and the viewer, a language that reveals the dimension of the human condition. After moving to England, Neagu approached performance and film based on the theme of the role of the artist in society.

Hyphen

With a simple form, Paul Neagu gives a philosophical approach to the hyphen that has become a visual tool. This intellectual form distils Neagu’s legacy, the result of the artist’s keen sense of developing semiotic inclinations.

Modern Energy Painting

Paul Neagu saw art as a spiritual journey, an experimental philosophy. This is evident in his hybrid modernist paintings, which draw on their chromatic energy and formal qualities.
