(b. 1978)
Studied at the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca until 2001, before continuing his studies in Venice between 2002 and 2004, as part of the “Nicolae Iorga” program. Șerban Savu’s painting captures the daily activities of solitary figures or tight groups that inhabit it and form a collective character, against the backdrop of familiar-looking urban or rural landscapes. The artist records freeze-frames of an everyday reality, sometimes anachronistic, that he watches from afar, or even, and most often, from above.
With his realistic style of documentary appearance, Șerban Savu inscribes himself in the contemporary landscape of his country through the melancholic story of a fallen world. The figures that populate his paintings remain elusive, distant, absorbed by their own world. The artist keeps the narration of his paintings at a distance, because the memory of communism remains omnipresent.
