Teodor Graur

(b. 1953)

Works across performance, photography, sculpture, painting, and installation. In recent years, the artist has focused on series of objects that together compose a nostalgic and, at the same time, ironic “museum.” His relationship with collected and recycled objects is visible in his assemblages, which are consistently configured as installation-exhibitions. Together with Olimpiu Bandalac, he founded the Euroartist București group (active between 1994 and 1996).

Teodor Graur exhibits cult objects transformed into mechanical devices. Through their social, industrial, and political meanings, the symbolic dimension of these object-sculptures is reinforced. By recycling objects in order to subvert their spiritual function and articulate an aesthetic position, Graur winks at Marcel Duchamp, while at the same time defying the years of dictatorship.
