How does an idea become an exhibition? What happens between the first conversation with an artist and the moment the works enter the space? And how much of curating is about choices, intuition, negotiations, or simply a great many questions?
On 19 September, Philippe Van Cauteren, artistic director of S.M.A.K. Ghent and curator of the Art Encounters Biennial 2027, talks about curating, drawing on his own experience and on questions from the audience. Not a lesson on “how it’s done,” but a conversation about exhibitions, artists, ideas, and everything that happens behind the scenes of an exhibition before it reaches the public.
The talk takes place at the Art Encounters building on 46C Take Ionescu Blvd. The event will be held in English. Admission is free.
The seventh edition of the Art Encounters Biennial, curated by Philippe Van Cauteren, will take place from 21 May to 4 July 2027 and marks the beginning of a long-term partnership between the Art Encounters Foundation and S.M.A.K. Ghent.
