Plato’s dialogues are like a world that invites you to explore it. We will start with two of them, Timaeus and Critias, in which we learn how the ancient city of Athens defeated Atlantis, a great power that sought to subjugate many other cities and territories. Starting from a fragment of the dialogue Critias, we will try to imagine what the city of Atlantis looked like and then draw it. We will look at and discuss each other’s drawings, after which we will talk about how we can learn through play—a theme in Plato’s philosophy.
These ideas are explored in Cătălin Partenie’s book Atlantis and Plato’s Children (2025), which aims to encourage readers to travel into Plato’s world. It is a world you need to see with your own eyes in order to marvel at it. The book will be available at the Art Encounters Bookshop.
