Anna-Mária Szabó

(b. 1989)

Anna-Mária Szabó was born in 1989 in Târgu-Mureș. She earned her degree in painting from the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca in 2013. She frequently participates in art residencies and group exhibitions both in Romania and abroad. Since September 2021, she has been the editor of the visual arts section of the cultural magazine Újvárad in Oradea.

Her artistic practice revolves around the question “what is real?” analyzing the ways in which we perceive reality and questioning the automatic assumptions and expectations attached to experiences.
At the center of her interest is the landscape in the era of the ecological crisis. She is concerned with understanding the environment through surreal constructions that oscillate between utopia and dystopia. The concept of landscape—a delimited and domesticated fragment of nature—moves from the background to the foreground as the stage of the crisis, inviting an exploration of the inseparable relationship between interior and exterior: environmental degradation is both the cause and consequence of our personal and collective neuroses.
