Mirela Ivanciu graduated from the Academy of Art in Bucharest (1996) and earned an MA in British Cultural Studies from the University of Bucharest (1997). She continued her studies at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht, where she graduated with honors (2000).
She continued her studies with an MFA in Photography at the Department of Visual Arts at the State University of New York at Buffalo (2002). In 2017, she completed her doctoral studies at the National University of Arts, Bucharest. She received a number of grants throughout her studies, such as the Mark Diamond Research Fund Grant, Niagara Council of the Arts Grant, Jan van Eyck Academy Grant, UNESCO-Aschberg Grant, and British Council Grant.
Mirela Ivanciu has exhibited at the National Museum of Contemporary Art – Bucharest, CIAC at Pont-Aven, France, Else Gallery in Sacramento, California, Selby Gallery at
the Ringling School of Art and Design, Sarasota, Florida; Bradford Gallery, Bradford, UK, Imagine Gallery, Beijing; Yan Club, Dashanzi, Beijing; Upton Gallery, Buffalo; Jan van Eyck Academy, Maastricht; Ceramic Avenue, HEDAH Gallery, Maastricht.
Mirela Ivanciu is interested in visual experimentation and the particularities of the female experience. Her projects explore and focus specifically on change, stability, and stillness, presence and mindfulness, as well as the interdependent relationships of the self within a social context. In recent years, she has used drawing and working with textiles to
explore these themes.
